Dialogue and Ending Voilence

The violenceand brutality we see in this world (the Mayhem in Mumbai being the latest example) has its roots in the psychological make-up of human beings - not any one individual or group of individuals, but human consciousness as a whole. If we look closely, we can see the same brutality reflected in different ways in our own lives. I believe that dialogue or conversation can be an excellent way to understand each other’s thinking (aka Point of View) and come to a shared understanding of the human condition and of this tumultuous world that we live in. I just received this email note from Tom Atlee (cointelligence.org) on conversation and thought it was very apt. Sharing it here since I don’t see a web page for it.

CONVERSATION

By Tom Atlee
I want to expand the concept of conversation.

The Latin and Indo-European roots of “con” and “vers” connote “turning together”.

This deeper understanding opens up new meanings.

When we speak our truths and hear each other deeply, letting each other’s voices and ideas and stories and passions shift us, we turn together.

When we dance or listen to music, and our bodies and attention resonate with its shifting vibrations and emotional resonances, we turn together.

When we all share the same perspectives, hopes or horrors within the vibrational embrace of mass media and the webs of telecommunications — 911, elections, earth from space — we turn together.

When we respond adaptively to the situations we face — individually or collectively — we are turning together with the energies and realities that reside within those situations.

When we as a community come together in times of crisis, rather than splitting apart into adversarial or self-aggrandizing camps, we are turning together.

As all plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen, and all animals breath in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide, we turn together in and as one great cycling flow of oxygen and carbon, releasing the energies of Life.

As our one small and beautiful planet spins out its days and nights, and circles the sun into seasons, and glides with our whole solar family on one vast arcing arm of our spiral Milky Way galaxy, we turn together.

We are in conversation — all of us, all the time, at more levels than we know — turning together.

Waking up is our emerging realization that we can converse more consciously, learn to do it more knowledgeably and heartfully, inspired and inspiring, and thereby evolve together with — and into — greater wisdom, wholesomeness, and grace… turning, together.

Power of Niche markets

Check out the extract from this article about urban poultry farming. One of the sites catering to folks interested in this topic is generating 6 million PVs/month. That’s probably a million plus uniques/month!

Chicken farmers are finding each other on sites like TheCityChicken.com, UrbanChickens.org and MadCityChickens.com. BackyardChickens.com logs some 6 million page views each month and has some 18,000 members in its forum, where community members share colorful stories (giving a chicken CPR), photos (from a California chicken show), even look to each other for comfort. “I am worried that non-BYC people won’t understand why a 34-year-old woman would cry over a $7 chicken,” writes a Stockton, N.J., woman, whose chicken was killed by a hawk.

Curd Rice (Bakala Bath)

I made some Bakala bath tonight. This is nothing but curd rice garnished with some fruits. It turned out so good that I had to blog about it! :)

Quick Recipe

Ingredients: 1 cup rice, 1 cup yogurt, half cup milk heated and cooled, coriander, a few grapes, a quarter pomegranate, salt, and items for “tadka”.

Tadka Items: A teaspoon of ghee (clarified butter), half teaspoon mustard, a pinch of asefotida (heeng), 1 red chilli broken up into 3 pieces, half teaspoon of udad dal and a few curry leaves.

Cook rice in a rice cooker by putting 1 part rice to 2 parts water. As the rice cooks, get the other things ready. Heat the milk and allow it to cool, finely cut the coriander, cut each grape into two pieces. Peel the pomegranate and take about half a cup of seeds for our curd rice.

Once the rice is done, allow it to cool on a plate. Once cool, transfer it to a vessel. Put the yogurt and milk into the rice and mix it up. Add the grapes, pomegranate, coriander and salt to taste. Mix again. Now heat a teaspoon of ghee (clarified butter). I use a small tablespoon-like vessel specially meant for putting tadka. If you don’t have this, Just use the smallest vessel that you have. Once the ghee is heated, add the mustard and wait for it to crackle. Once that happens, add (in the following order) udad dal, asefotida (heeng), chilli pieces and curry leaves. Now take the tadka off the burner and let it cool for about 30 seconds. Now add the tadka to the curd rice. Bakala Bath is now ready. Enjoy!
